The location is also close to the Tongariro National Park region which enjoys World Heritage Area status for it's outstanding natural values. Daily transport is available to and from the Tongariro Crossing - claimed by Lonely Planet to be the best one day walk in New Zealand - 19kms across an alpine lunar landscape. This region featured in the film trilogy, Lord of the Rings, as orc country, Mordor, under Mt Doom. the Whakapapa ski fields - the largest in New Zealand - are about 40 minutes drive from Turangi.
