About Murchison

| Murchison |
Murchison is the District's southern-most township and is a central base for the many outdoor activities in the area including historic gold trails, rafting and kayaking, tramping, hunting and fishing. Geographical isolation has meant the residents of Murchison have developed a real 'can do'? attitude. Building their own hydroelectric power scheme, airport, and television transmitter are just a few of the challenges the enterprising town has taken on. This attitude is reflected now in the way the town has embraced the adventure tourism industry and its stunning scenery has also attracted movie and documentary crews on several occasions. Common sense, self reliance, and community spirit are the keys that keep Murchison growing, flourishing and looking forward to an exciting future. There is plenty going on in the Murchison area to get visitors excited. The mighty Buller River flows through the town. You can experience the river at high speed on a jet boat or up close and personal on a white water rafting trip. View it from above on swing bridge and comet line or get your hands into the water panning for gold.
